What is Mitral Valve Disease, Really?
Think of the heart as a pump with a series of one-way doors (valves). In dogs with MVD, the mitral valve degenerates over time and doesn’t close properly, allowing blood to leak backward. A vet hears this leak as a “heart murmur.” Over time, this strain can lead to congestive heart failure.
