Shale Hills Fenced Dog Park (West Hoxton)

Shale Hills is the one Liverpool locals point you to first. It’s fully fenced, with an agility circuit of ten training stations, a sensory garden and a separate area for small dogs. Worth knowing before you drive out: the ground is heavy clay and goes boggy after rain, so keep a towel in the car.
Insider Tip: The car park gates lock at 6:00pm, or 8:00pm during daylight savings. Pedestrian access runs 24 Hours, 7 Days, but your car will be shut in if you stay past closing. There are no toilets on-site.
Emerald Hills Dog Park (Leppington)

Camden Council built this one recently and it shows. Fully fenced, with ramps and weave poles for agility work and a separate zone for small dogs. It also has solar lighting, which makes it one of the few places out this way where you can still get a run in after dark in winter.
Insider Tip: The small dog area has almost no shade. On a 30-degree day, aim for before 9:00am or after 5:00pm so your dog isn’t standing on hot ground.
Open Space: The Best Unfenced Adventures
If your dog has reliable recall, the West opens right up. These are wide natural corridors along the rivers, good for a long walk and a swim with no fence in sight. Be honest with yourself about recall before you unclip the lead, because there’s nothing out here to stop a dog that decides to keep going.
Yarramundi Reserve (Agnes Banks)

Yarramundi sits out in the Hawkesbury where the Grose and Nepean rivers meet. Dogs swim off the bank and the walking is open and unhurried, which is the draw. It’s completely unfenced. There are no taps and no poo bags here, so bring water, bring bags and take your rubbish home with you.
Insider Tip: Check the council website for river algae alerts before you let your dog swim. Currents run hard after rain, so keep anything but a confident swimmer close to the edge.
