In Botany, Yarra Bay Oval is a large, multi-use local reserve that provides ample space but is let down by a lack of key amenities and poor turf quality. This large, 4.1-hectare reserve is a designated 24/7 off-leash area. A major safety concern is its unfenced boundary along the very busy Bunnerong Road. Dogs are prohibited within 10 metres of the fenced playground located in the south-east corner.

Key Park Features & Amenities

The park is deficient in basic amenities, most critically lacking a water source and public toilets. Natural shade is limited. The grass quality can be poor, with issues like bindis being prevalent in some areas. The park also contains a cricket pitch, a basketball court, and a kids’ bicycle track. Parking is available on the street.

For the Dogs:

  • CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING: Unfenced on a Busy Road. The park’s unfenced boundary along the very busy Bunnerong Road makes it only suitable for dogs with reliable recall.
  • 24/7 Off-Leash Access: This large, open reserve is a designated off-leash area that is open all day, every day.
  • No Water Source: The park critically lacks a water source, so you must bring your own water and bowl.
  • Poor Grass Quality: The grass quality can be poor, with issues like bindis in some areas.

For the Humans:

  • No Public Toilets: There are no public toilets on-site.
  • Limited Shade: Natural shade is limited.
  • Sports Facilities: The park contains a cricket pitch, a basketball court, and a kids’ bicycle track.
  • On-Street Parking: Parking is available on the street.

Insider Tip: Check for Bindis and Bring Water

Before letting your dog run free, check the grass for bindis and other prickles, as this can be a common issue with the turf quality here. The lack of a water source makes bringing your own essential.
