The Best Off-Leash Beaches
The Bega Valley is famous for its “Green Zones” where dogs can run 24/7. While you won’t find a structured canine agility course on the sand, the natural dunes and surf provide all the workout your dog needs.
Short Point Recreation Reserve (Merimbula)
📍 Address: Short Point Road, Merimbula NSW 2548, Australia
Short Point is arguably the most scenic leash-free reserve in the country. It is a massive, unfenced grassy headland that offers 24/7 freedom and views that will take your breath away. It is a social hub for local apartment dogs and travelers alike. While there is no fenced puppy play area here, the sheer size of the headland allows nervous dogs to find a quiet corner. Access to the beach is via a natural track, perfect for a post-run swim.
Insider Tip: There is often a coffee van at the car park in the mornings. Grab a brew and watch for whales during migration season while your dog investigates the headland. Watch the cliff edges as there are no barriers.

Lions Park / Jiguma Beach (Pambula Beach)
📍 Address: Coraki Dr, Pambula Beach NSW 2549, Australia
If you have a dog that isn’t ready for a 100% open off-leash dog beach, this is your best bet. Naturally enclosed by rock formations, this cove feels much safer and more contained than the open surf. It is one of the best-equipped spots in the region, featuring public toilets, free gas BBQs, and even an outdoor shower. It is a fantastic family destination where the dog is truly part of the weekend picnic.
Insider Tip: Arrive early on weekends as the small car park fills up by 10 am. The rocks provide great shade for dogs that need a break from the sun, but keep an eye on the tide so you don’t get cornered!
Grassy Reserves and River Runs
Inland from the coast, the Bega Valley offers several large-scale reserves. These are perfect for those who want to avoid the salt and sand while enjoying a dog-friendly walking trail experience.
Old Bega Racecourse (Bega)
📍 Address: East St, Bega NSW 2550, Australia
For high-energy working breeds, the Old Bega Racecourse is a lifesaver. It is a massive, wide-open grassy space where dogs can hit top speed without any obstacles. It is a simple, rustic leash-free reserve that relies on the Bega River as a natural boundary. While it lacks the fancy gear of a city park, the sheer acreage makes it ideal for long-distance fetch or recall training. Note that you must be entirely self-sufficient here.
Insider Tip: There are no water taps or bins on-site. Pack a large water bottle and plenty of bags. If your dog loves to sniff, head toward the riverbank for a natural “sniffari” adventure.

Bega Valley Dog Park FAQ
Q: Are there any fenced dog parks in the Bega Valley?
A: Currently, the region consists almost entirely of unfenced areas. If you need a secure feel, Lions Park in Pambula Beach is naturally enclosed by rock walls, which provides more safety than an open beach.
Q: Which beach is best for dogs that are not confident swimmers?
A: Punt Landing (Mogareeka) and Bar Beach (Merimbula) are the best choices. Both offer very calm, shallow inlet water rather than open surf, which is perfect for smaller dogs.
Q: Can dogs go to Bar Beach in summer?
A: Only in the morning and evening. From 1 December to 30 April, dogs are prohibited from Bar Beach between 10 am and 4 pm daily. At other times, it is off-leash.
