Reed Park Fenced Dog Park (Horsley)

📍 Address: Bong Bong Rd, Horsley, NSW 2530

Reed Park is one of the better-designed fenced puppy play areas in the region. It has two separate enclosures, so small and large dogs can play without a size mismatch, plus a canine agility course with tunnels and obstacles. It’s a popular social spot, but a word of warning: the drainage is poor. After heavy rain it gets boggy, so pack a towel for muddy paws.

Insider Tip: Get there early on weekends to grab a spot in the car park. The regulars are friendly and look after the place, so it’s an easy way for new locals to meet other owners.

Proud Park (Helensburgh)

Fresh off a big upgrade, Proud Park is a well-run leash-free reserve. It’s fully fenced, with sheltered seating and modern water stations. It sits right next to a children’s playground, which makes it easy for families, and dogs of all sizes can socialise 24/7 without traffic nearby.

Insider Tip: There are no public toilets here, so plan ahead. The new shelters keep you out of the sun while your dog checks out the fresh turf.

Coastal Adventures & Open Runs

The Illawarra is known for its off-leash dog beach culture. Where a lot of councils limit dogs to narrow time windows, several of Wollongong’s coastal spots are 24/7 “Green Zones”.

McCauley’s Beach (Thirroul)

📍 Address: Corbett Avenue, Thirroul NSW 2515

This is one of the best coastal spots in the area. It’s a permanent off-leash zone, so your dog can run the sand any time of day. There’s open surf for confident swimmers and a calm creek at the southern end for puppies. It’s a beautiful, unspoilt stretch of coast, though there are no public toilets, which can be awkward on longer visits. It’s completely unfenced, so make sure your dog’s recall is reliable before letting them off near the water.

Insider Tip: Parking on Corbett Avenue is very limited. Aim for a weekday or get there early on weekends. Use the beach showers to rinse off the salt before you head home.
